Challenge #84
Most of the characters in Aoyama-sensei's crew may have a keen sense of justice, but that doesn't mean they're immune to:
THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS
Pride, envy, lust, sloth, anger, gluttony, and greed—take your pick! Choose one, two, a few, or even all of them! The challenge doesn't have to be played straight, however; characters can be shown struggling to avoid or overcoming their favorite sins (e.g. Genta going on a diet, Ran forcing Kogorou to clean up after himself). Have fun!

It's really weird, but your post is dated Jan. 21st when it's only Jan. 17th. I think LiveJournal is messing up again.

Thank you very much! ♥ I really hope so, too! Actually, I've had this idea for a quite a while now (since after watching a certain movie on TV; I've forgotten the title, unfortunately), but I keep forgetting to post. . . . *sweatdrops*
I think that the major sin for the detectives and thief is probably pride. Any other possibilities?
I agree! As for other possibilities, Kogorou is full of faults, isn't he? I resisted the urge to keep citing him as an example more than once; he indulges in all these sins quite frankly! Other than that (and the examples I already mentioned), the only other things I could think of Eri's pride and Shinichi and Ran's jealous tendencies. *bangs head on the table*

Regarding the date, that's because I scheduled it to post on Monday, since I already posted this week's challenge the day before. Figured it would still be Sunday for majority of the fandom since I'm from the Philippines. . . . Are you a moderator, maintainer, or owner of the comm, by any chance? According to the FAQ, only these people are allowed to see this post before the scheduled date aside from me. (Oddly enough, I didn't receive a notif of this comment at all—both from the LJ inbox and my e-mail; I just saw this when I checked the comm and was quite surprised to see a comment in this post when it's not supposed to be posted yet. Hmm . . .)
EDIT: Okay, I checked my e-mail and, apparently, your comment was sent to my inbox only about thirty minutes ago. Weird.

I don't think that I'm any of those. I only just joined the community recently and I still haven't figured out how to get new posts emailed to me.
I think that wrath might apply to Ran and Aoko. I'm not sure about Kazuha. Genta and Mitsuhiko usually get jealous of Conan after Ayumi is nice to him. I'll have to think some more.

Then you shouldn't be able to see this post yet! LJ! Now that I think about it, though, I edited this post immediately after posting (as I had forgotten to mark the actual challenge in bold), and then I edited it again upon noticing the date reverted back to the 17th, I wonder if that had something to do with it. . . . Good thing I resisted the temptation to create scheduled posts for my other ideas (I didn't want my posting of challenges consecutively to discourage others from posting theirs), huh?
I only just joined the community recently and I still haven't figured out how to get new posts emailed to me.
As for having new posts from the comm e-mailed to you, go to this link (http://www.livejournal.com/manage/subscriptions/user.bml?journal=manycases1truth). I don't really use the feature, though, since I check my friends page once a week at the very least.

Oh, yeah, I haven't thought of those! Good job! Though, if I recall correctly, it's been ages since we've seen a wrathful Ran. I miss seeing that side of her. . . . And I'm not too sure about Kazuha, either. Mitsuhiko, to me, seems to have moved on from his crush from Ayumi (since he's now interested in Ai), though I could be wrong; it's still quite possible for him to have crushes on both girls. Thank you for the suggestions! ♥

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)Thanks for the link! I actually don't know much about the canon for Detective Conan and Magic Kaito. I got into this fandom by reading some great fanfiction, but I'm pretty lazy with reading/watching the canon for nearly all my fandoms.
I've been trying to think of what sins might apply to the Black Org. members, but all I can come up with is maybe pride. After all, they are good at killing people and think that the Black Org. as a whole (and possibly they themselves) can't be taken down. Mostly though, I tend to think of them as lacking emotions or only showing false ones.

I'm quite surprised to know you don't know much about the canon, considering how detailed and insightful your challenges are, especially the last one. If I may ask, how far are you into the series? Or do you just read/watch random cases you find interesting?
Would you mind recommending some? I'm always on the lookout for new DC/MK fic to read! Truth be told, for my first two years in this fandom, most of my knowledge of the canon was steeped on fanfiction (and the first fifty-one episodes that aired in my country at the time). Heck, I even had the audacity to write fics (an example can be found here (http://theorchidforest.livejournal.com/2193.html)) despite my lack of knowledge! I think about it now, and I can't believe the positive responses the fic had! If I could do it all over again, I'd write them differently!
Don't worry, I'm too lazy to watch or read the canon for most of my fandoms as well! Heck, I haven't even watched all the episodes and movies of Conan! (I'm up to date with the manga, though.) I find that the best way to get myself to watch a series is if it airs on TV, since it disciplines me to watch at a certain time. If I only have access to a series via the Internet, my tendency is to procrastinate, since I would be busy doing other things online (mostly Conan-related, har har). More than that, however, I tend to waver between feeling guilty about watching fansubs—they are technically illegal, after all—and thinking that Animax, a cable channel which shows subbed animé (although some titles are dubbed in English), would eventually air those titles I've been meaning to watch or read, anyway. It's funny, though; after taking an entire year to read what was then 600+ files of Conan in its entirety (on a dial-up connection for the first several months, mind you!, every other manga title, even the long-running ones, should already be a piece of cake for me! But it seems no other series has given me that kind of motivation; after two years of reliance on fanfiction and e-mail discussions with
That said, you might find the following to be quite helpful: the Detective Conan World Wiki (http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/) (the ultimate DC/MK resource; it is amazing and pawns Wikipedia any day),
Heh, looks like I've rambled too much for the LJ comment box. (Been a while since I've done that, though.) *sweatdrops* Sorry about that, and I'll be continuing my response in another comment! *misses the days when subject lines were still available in non-custom comment pages* See you!

"If I may ask, how far are you into the series? Or do you just read/watch random cases you find interesting?"
Actually, I haven't watched a single episode or read a single chapter of Detective Conan. All of my knowledge comes from fanfiction, comments, and searches on Google. I've tried to watch the canons of my fandoms before, but they tend to deviate from my own mental images of the characters. It's like how I usually can't watch the movies based on books that I've read. Plus, it's easier for me to read about dead bodies than to see drawn dead bodies.
It doesn't help that manga tends to have a lot of fanservice in it, some series more than others. Fanservice gets on my nerves and usually detracts from the story. Kaito is my favorite character, but if I tried reading MK, then I'd probably hate him for flipping Aoko's skirt all the time. Also, part of my aversion to reading about sex is based on my religious beliefs so I end up feeling guilty if I try to read something with a lot of sexual material in it, even if iI'm only reading for the plot.
"Would you mind recommending some? I'm always on the lookout for new DC/MK fic to read!"
I'm not sure how true to canon this is, but I've been reading a series by Ten-Faced that starts with "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot". The first story focused on Conan and Hattori while the 2nd story is more about the MK crew so far. Both are about friendship and mysteries. The one-shot about Hakuba is amazing! The author profile should be here (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3530877/Ten-Faced) if I've done this right.
I also recently read "1412" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6723677/1/1412) by Shiori Hitohana. It's a crossover between DC and Numbers, a show about a mathematician helping his FBI brother solve crimes. It involves Kaito, Conan, and Hakuba. It's an interesting read, but I felt like there were small moments of OOCness. Of course, I'm not sure it's really OOCness or if I just have a different view of the characters from only reading fanon. This story is a bit old, but supposedly the author plans on a sequel eventually featuring Ai.
Thanks for the links! I should probably read up to try planning out more challenges eventually. I don't want to leave all the work to you and ran_mouri82. :)

Thank you for the additional suggestion! ♥ How about lust for Gin and Vermouth? The martini scene between the two of them pretty much screams sexual innuendo! And it’s mentioned in Conan Drill that Gin may have had sexual relations with Sherry. Note, however, that not everybody considers the contents of the official guidebook to be canon, even though Aoyama-sensei approved its publication. As for me, I certainly do think it's highly likely Gin and Sherry have slept together, though I doubt it's consensual. Not necessarily rape (though I think Gin isn't above that), but for power and protection. Remember, Vermouth hates the Miyanos.
As for the members of the Org lacking emotions, I don't think that's the case for Vermouth and Bourbon. Quite frankly, I find them to be quite dynamic, and the only interesting ones at that. (Though I will admit I'm partial to Gin crack fic.) Some fans even speculate—I'm one of them—that Bourbon has feelings for Akemi, which is one of the reasons why he hates Shuuichi.
Oh, and I just remembered: Gin hates both Shuuichi and Vermouthmdash;yay for wrath! And on the side of the police, we have Officer Chiba for gluttony and sloth (and maybe greed). I mean, he could surely stand to lose some weight, and he's always late for work (because of sleeping in)! Although I'm not entirely sure, I also mentioned greed for Chiba because he's an otaku, and likes to collect stuff, so . . . And Ai monitors Professor Agasa’s diet, doesn’t she?
Unscreened your anonymous comment, by the way~

Thank you!
I thought of 2 more recommendations. "Sonoko Suzuki and Eleven Encounters With the Female Characters of DC" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8833662/1/Sonoko-Suzuki-and-Eleven-Encounters-With-the-Female-Characters-of-DC) involves a bit of OOCness, but the focus on the female characters is pretty unique.
You've probably already discovered Fallout (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5676679/1/Fallout), but I wanted to mention it just in case. I wasn't sure about this one at first, but it won me over with a scene of Kaito using his brain in a new way. It involves all of the detective boys as well as many police characters. Warning, the author has posted around 240,000 words in 3 years with the author stating in the last chapter that "The beginning of this story is now concluded."
Any recommendations for me?

I just read Sonoko Suzuki and Eleven Encounters With the Female Characters of DC earlier today, and I quite enjoyed it, despite the slight OOC-ness and Makoto's apparent nonexistence. A really interesting concept indeed. I could only wish more characters were featured, especially Eri, as she's her best friend's mom. Thanks for the recommendation!
As for Fallout, I've seen it on FF.N before, but I haven't actually read it since I haven't watched the movie which is the prelude to the events of the fic. *sweatdrops* That, and I get intimidated by really long ensemble fics, which really doesn't make sense since I have no problem reading lengthy novels or thick books. . . . But, okay, as you've recommended it, I'll make it a point to finally watch Movie 13 and read your recommendation. . . . Probably the kick start I need to finally read legendary fanfiction in the fandom such as
Once again, thank you so much for the recommendations! ♥ I'll come back with mine as soon as I can.

That's what I really like in DC and MK fics: when the characters are smart and working together to achieve a goal, usually in order to take down the Black Organization. I prefer either no or canon pairings, and Kaito is my favorite character. I've read a lot of the older popular fics in the fandom but haven't been recommending them because I thought that you'd probably found them already. The major problem is finding new good authors since a lot of the older ones have stopped or slowed down in posting.
I'm not sure if you saw my reply to the first part of your two-part post, but I listed 2 more recommendations there. I'll go ahead and list my favorite authors below, even though they're old and popular enough that you've probably seen them before:
Ocianne (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/356908/Ocianne) tends to focus on Hakuba and Kaito but does write some involving Shinichi and Hattori as well. Her Promenade (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2978396/1/Promenade) story has a lot of crossovers, but I could follow along well enough. The second story in that series has almost no crossovers and more alternate realities, as Kaito and Hakuba get LOST. The different realities they visit are pretty interesting, even if they only spend a little time in each one. I THINK that the third story in the series will probably involve more Shinichi and possibly Hattori, as the author has set things up so that Conan will almost have to see Kaito's point-of-view better. The problem is that we get an update in this series maybe once a year.
Ellen Brand (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/33577/Ellen-Brand) is more balanced in writing the Gosho boys. I really want to see more of her "An Unprofessional Opinion (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3620272/1/An-Unprofessional-Opinion)" series. Warning, she likes to include the supernatural in her stories. I'm not sure about your preferences, but while I'll read supernatural/fantasy, reading supernatural/religious makes me uncomfortable. If you want more details on which of her stories are supernatural/religious, then let me know.
Finally, blinkblink (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/45487/blinkblink) is very good at writing Inspector Nakamori and his squad. I really must recommend the series that begins with "Slip and Fall (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4617412/1/Slip-and-Fall)" (Kaito's point of view) and "Pride Goeth Before (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4730431/1/Pride-Goeth-Before)" (Nakamori's point of view). It looks like the author probably won't ever get around to writing the last story in the series, but she's posted the prologue and outline on her LJ (http://what-we-dream.livejournal.com/). This author also writes stories involving Aoko and Kid, if you want to check them out.

BTW, this challenge rocks. I've been reading more Fullmetal Alchemist manga, so homunculi are on the brain. Genta going on a diet, LOL! Somehow I'm seeing that as an Ai friendship fic, since she would so be on board to monitor him.

Thank you! ♥ I try my best to be original. *grins* For next week's challenge, I was thinking about a "Seven Heavenly Virtues" to match this one, but when I looked up the list of virtues online, all I could think of was Ran. *sweatdrops* What do you think?
Glad to know I'm not the only one who’s thinking of FMA (which I totally need to watch/read more, but Conan's already sapping what little fandom money I have, and I can never seem to catch Brotherhood whenever it airs on our animé channel, sigh)!
Well, Ai already has a journal of Genta's growth (which I would really love to write someday; I think it would be hilarious), doesn't she? That said, I think Genta would only be interested in going on a diet once he reaches middle school or high school. *thinks of the OVA 9! Detective Boys* I've never told you this, but I've been secretly thinking you should've done the Detective Boys as a whole instead of just Shinichi/Conan and Shiho/Ai; it would be really nice to read more DB fic that doesn't involve 'shipping.

This is so sad considering I haven't thought up so much as a drabble for these challenges yet. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to try, but between work and RL drama, it just hasn't happened lately. Sadness.
Ai does? Where is that? Eh, I was inspired by the friendship pairing, so got to go with one's muse, you know? But don't worry, such a 30 Friends pairing necessarily involves the DB. They've already been in two of them, and I'm sure there will be more. Having said that, the plot bunny nipping at me now involves just Conan and Ai and--don't want to give it away, but it's pretty random. LOL

Well, Ran's the paragon of virtue in this series, after all (which is exactly why some people hate her, sadly). *grins* I also thought of Kogorou and Eri's reconciliation for forgiveness, but I've been turned off by reading too many rushed fics regarding the matter, even though I yearn for it to happen in canon so badly. But, yes, I do agree, writing about vices is just more fun! (Speaking of vices, I thought about that for a future challenge, but it's not that different from this one, so I'm chucking that idea.) Goodbye to the seven heavenly virtues, then!
. . . but it sounds like you've got a sweet list going. :D
Eee, thank you so much! ♥ It's probably too early, but I've been brainstorming ideas for the upcoming hundredth challenge!
This is so sad considering I haven't thought up so much as a drabble for these challenges yet. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to try, but between work and RL drama, it just hasn't happened lately. Sadness.
Considering my responses to your challenges haven't made it past the idea stage (and will be stuck there for quite a while, since I still owe you that long overdue birthday fic of yours *is shot*), don't feel bad about it! AndwhatisthisRLdrama?! I hope things get better for you soon. *hugs*
Ai does? Where is that?
Yesss. She mentions it during the Domestic Violence (http://www.dctp.ws/V76-Reader/V76-6Read/A13.html) case (File 801/Volume 76, File 6), whilst videotaping Genta eating. While majority of the fandom was complaining about Aoyama-sensei's trolling (I wasn't too surprised, to be honest), I was busy thinking, "Fic material!" Gotta love her snarkiness. ♥
Eh, I was inspired by the friendship pairing, so got to go with one's muse, you know? But don't worry, such a 30 Friends pairing necessarily involves the DB. They've already been in two of them, and I'm sure there will be more.
That's true. Regardless, I'm glad the DB are in your fics (not that I don't like Shinichi/Conan and Shiho/Ai by themselves), and I'm looking forward to future fics with them! One of these days, I want to try writing the DB, too. . . .
Having said that, the plot bunny nipping at me now involves just Conan and Ai and--don't want to give it away, but it's pretty random. LOL
Random is good. Random is fun (as long as they're still in character, it doesn't bother me, at least)! Looking forward to it! (Feel free to take your time, though! I'd be a hypocrite if told you to hurry~)

Ah, I remember the Domestic Violence case. I took Ai's comment as a throwaway line, but it makes for fun fic material.
Thanks for the encouragement. ♥ Actually helped me make progress on that 30 Friends chapter.
